Day 3, Part 2: Punakaiki - Hokitika - Fox Glacier, 22 Mar 2011
After lunch at Punakaiki, the journey continues south towards Fox Glacier. I’m back at State Highway 6 (SH6) again, past Greymouth and after 1 hour 15 minutes, I took a break at Hokitika.

Oh, there’s a beach. Let’s head over there first ![]()

Colourful wall

Old cinema. Not sure if they are still screening anything here

Free public library

Interesting sign board…yummy!

The green structure is meant to promote a jade factory, not the backpacker

The National Kiwi Centre, you get to see live kiwi here…for a fee
After spending a little over 1 hour at Hokitika, I coutinue towards south along SH6. About 20 minutes later, there is a short road that leads to Lake Mahinapua

This is taken while crossing a river, but I did not take note on which river

Snow mountain can be seen at the far end. I’m getting close to the glaciers

Reached Franz Josef Glacier after 2 hours and 10 minutes drive from Hokitika. This place seems to be just a one street town. Stopped here to make some calls to book accommodation. Finally got a room at Fox Glacier. Off I go again

Fox Glacier should not be far away. Although it’s getting late but I can’t resist stopping aside for this photo

Finally reach Fox Glacier town at 7:10PM, 40 minutes away from Franz Josef. You can see quite a number of shops selling scenic flight packages. This one has an attractive chopper but I went for another shop instead ![]()

There are probably two noticable restaurants on the main street, either that…

…or this. I didn’t think long before settling down here as it is already past my dinner time ![]()
