Day 3, Part 1: Greymouth - Punakaiki, 22 Mar 2011
Greymouth is actually located at the mouth of Grey River, which is how this place got the name. I wanted to visit the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki but not sure of best time to reach there for the high tide. Lets check it out at i-SITE when it opens at 8:30AM

...

i-SITE is a place that you should visit to gather great information on attractive places around NZ. It seems that the high tide is about 12:30PM, and it only takes one hour drive to Punakaiki, so I have plenty of time to walk around Greymouth

Sign boards outside i-SITE

Shops at Guinness St

More old shops at Mackay St

Something interesting here…

Fisherman statue. At the foot, it reads ‘To Those Who Help Others’

Clock tower…and it’s only 10:15AM. Enough time to explore more

Clock tower standing next to Greymouth floodwall

Left Bank Art Gallery, directly opposite clock tower

View of Mawhera Quay and floodwall

Street sign of Tainui St

Attractive sign board. Seems like a good deal there

It’s hard to find Hong Kong food here, but I’m not hungry yet.

McDonald’s eh. Nope, I have enough of it…at least for now

I took State Highway 6 towards Punakaiki and along the way, there is a nice seaview spot at Rapahoe

This is overlooking Tazman Sea

I’m at the Pancake Rocks by noon and this is the entrance. You have to walk further in a bit to see the ‘pancake’

You can see rocks resembling layers of pancake

That looks like a head with ‘grass’ hair

One of the blowhole is called Chimney Pot

Another angle of Chimney Pot. You can see the opening where waves can come in

This platform has the best view of the entire area

Putai - the largest blowhole, but no sign of big waves yet

Closer view of the ‘pancake’. You can touch all you want here

Do you have good imagination?

Surge Pool blowhole

You can see walkway circling around the Pancake Rocks. I waited for about an hour here and felt cheated for arriving at the right time for high tide. No waves erupting from blowholes

There is only one restaurant in the whole area, the Pancake Rocks Cafe

I had nothing special, so there is no food photo this time
